Learn From Your Errors And Move On

I just turned 31 years of age, so considering im now getting into my 30’s, health and fitness is a big part of my life. I try to eat right and I play pick-up basketball Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 7 a.m. and then Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at noon.

There’s a lesson I have learned from basketball that I really try and apply to my life and business. If I make a mistake forget about it and move on. If I miss an easy layup, if I make a bad pass, if my team loses 5 games in a row… I try and learn from it and MOVE ON!

For me it’s natural to dwell on the negative… there’s been times when i’m playing a game and i’m still angry and thinking about a bad play I made in a previous game. This is without a doubt is NOT ideal.

It was killing my internal game. So much of sports is mental too. Most great players in any sport have a good head. So I have made a huge effort to try and learn from my mistakes, and just simply forget about em.

Everybody in this world is going to take their knocks with sports, family, work, friends, whatever. Learn from the expereience and MOVE ON!!!!

That’s all…

    Hi Jason,

I enjoyed your comments about forgetting your mistakes and just moving on. You have the correct perspective when it comes to learning from your mistakes. Without them how do we learn and grow. Let’s just say that I am far from my 30’s and I am still making mistakes and still learning. I don’t know what your personal spiritual beliefs might be but your note very nicely reinforced something I read just this morning in the ‘good book’. I was reading in the new testament and in Philippians 3:13-14 it says - ‘Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.’ Sounds like you’re right on target. By the way, I really enjoyed (and I am benefitting from) ‘Untold Marketing Secrets’. Thank you for giving back. Keep up the good work!

    Good reminder. I’m reminded of a quote…

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career, I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty six times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over in my life. And that’s why I succeed!” - Michael Jordan

    Hope that inspires someone.

This is a lesson I have to remind myself of constantly. I tend to be a perfectionist, and as perfectionists go, I will stop doing something if I don’t think I can get it right.

But I am learning that you can drop a pass and it is not the end of the world. I had one of those moments playing high school football. I let that moment linger too long and I lost focus.

(Basketball was something totally different. I can pass real well, just don’t ask me to shoot.)

This is where I rely more on my faith. For me, Jesus helps me return my focus.

I have also learned that there are some things that I am doing that frustrate me because I am not gifted in that area. There are others who should be doing it.

Kind of like passing the ball to the point guard so he can manage the play. The point guard is one the outside looking at the overall picture. The forwards and center provide options if he cannot push the ball into the paint. I have to learn to see the options.

    Anyway, great post. Thanks,
    David
